Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs)
Neural Radiance Fields use deep neural networks (typically MLPs) to represent complex 3D scenes. By feeding the network a series of 2D photographs captured from various angles, the system learns to reconstruct the volume, lighting, and viewing angles of the space, allowing for smooth camera paths through a completely synthetic space.
Key Advantages:
- Synthesizes highly realistic reflections, specular lighting, and refractions.
- Reconstructs fine details (like hair, glass, or dust) that confuse traditional photogrammetry.
- Compresses massive spatial scenes into small weight files.
3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS)
3D Gaussian Splatting is a breakthrough real-time rendering technique. Instead of querying a neural network for every ray (like NeRFs), it represents the 3D scene using millions of transparent, colored 3D ellipsoids (Gaussians). These Gaussians are rasterized directly to the screen using tile-based rasterization algorithms.
